This week I had an interesting conversation where the commentary on Halloween was that it was getting spiritually darker. The comment caught me a little because as far as I could tell, halloween was actually becoming less about goblins and ghosts and more about candy and fun. I must admit it reminded me a lot of my childhood. I was one of those poor unfortunate people who didn’t get to go out trick or treating. Although I respect and admire my parents for sticking to their convictions in spite of intense pressure from their children I don’t think I feel quite so strongly about what Hallowe’en is and what it isn’t. Doug Doyle a friend and fellow blogger has written a great post on halloween that articulates a lot of what I feel about halloween and how we as followers of Christ should respond to it.

My personal belief is that wherever Christendom has reacted in the past it may be healthy to revisit and see what still needs to be separate and what can actually be repatriated. Halloween in my opinion is a great opportunity for us as followers of Christ to reclaim for Christ something we’ve run away from for a long time. I realize not everyone will agree and I’m cool with that but what an amazing opportunity to interact with those far from Christ and enjoy the company and friendship of neighbours, friends and family. If you’re looking for some ideas on what to do this Halloween I suggest taking a look at Henry Zonio’s blog, he shares some cool ideas on how to make this Halloween a missional one.

Thanks for your perspective. Spent the evening with friends old and new – candy and laughs. Good times!
