An Army Of Ordinary People

An Army Of Ordinary People

I received a copy of this book from Tyndale Publishers and the title really appealed to me.  The idea of stories of ordinary people having a kingdom impact was really cool.  What I didn’t realize was that this book was written by a ‘simple church’ planter.  I was hoping for just some neat stories of people being the church and what this book is really about is people who have applied the ‘simple church’ model of doing church in their lives.  If that’s what you’re into, then this book will galvanize what you’re up to but if not, you may find the underlying message a somewhat subversive advertisement for ‘simple churches’.  As I was reading through the stories I found most of them were feel-good in the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” kind of way.  Everyone in the book was successful at doing what they set out to accomplish and it was all peachy.  I am not sure what I was expecting based on the title but when I see the words ‘real-life’ I want a bit of drama.  The stories are very short and leave out a lot of the narrative detail that makes a good story appealing.  All in all the book was just okay.
